From Costly Storage Heaters to a Smart, Efficient Heat Pump – with a £7,500 Grant!
From Outdated Storage Heaters to a Cutting-Edge Heat Pump – and a £7,500 Grant!
At Central Plumbing & Heating, we specialise in helping homeowners transition to energy-efficient heating solutions. This recent heat pump installation in Langworth, Lincolnshire, is a great example of how upgrading outdated heating can reduce energy bills, improve comfort, and lower carbon emissions - and thanks to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), this family saved £7,500 on their installation!
The Problem: Inefficient Storage Heaters & High Energy Costs
Our clients, a family in Langworth, were using 1990s electric storage heaters alongside an immersion-heated hot water cylinder. While functional, these systems were:
Expensive to run – Storage heaters use off-peak electricity but don’t adjust well to changing temperatures, often leading to wasted energy.
Inefficient – Immersion cylinders consume a large amount of electricity, making them costly to operate.
Lacking control – Unlike modern heating systems, storage heaters don’t allow for precise temperature adjustments.
The family wanted a more efficient, cost-effective heating system that would future-proof their home. Since they were replacing an electric heating system with a heat pump, they also qualified for a £7,500 government grant - making the upgrade much more affordable.
The Solution: A Bespoke Heat Pump System, Designed for Maximum Efficiency
Every home is different, which is why we design our heat pump systems to match the exact needs of each property.
Our resident heat pump expert, Liam, who is Heat Geek Verified and MCS Certified, designed and installed a high-performance air source heat pump system tailored to this home. The work included:
1. Removing the existing storage heaters and outdated immersion cylinder.
2. Fitting a new air source heat pump with an unvented cylinder for efficient hot water storage.
3. Installing 7 new radiators, sized to operate at lower flow temperatures for maximum efficiency.
4. Applying for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme on behalf of the family to reduce upfront costs.
The Results: Lower Bills, Higher Efficiency, and a Warmer Home
This bespoke heat pump system was designed with a flow temperature of just 43°C, significantly lower than a traditional gas boiler, meaning the system runs more efficiently and at a fraction of the cost.
SCOP of 4.08 – For every 1kW of electricity used, the heat pump produces over 4kW of heat, making it 400% efficient.
Running costs reduced by 75% – Compared to their old system, this family will see a huge reduction in energy bills.
£7,500 grant secured – Thanks to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, their upfront costs were significantly reduced.
A more sustainable home – By switching to a renewable heating solution, this household has cut its carbon footprint while increasing comfort.
